Hallsville Review

Feb 6, 1925

Another brick building for Hallsville opposite the post office facing west. The building is being erected by D P Cain and will be occupied by Rosborough Bros. who will open a first-class prescription drug store.

First State Bank officers: T P Black, pres.; J W Holloway, Vice pres; C F Haywood, cashier; S R Haywood, asst cashier.


Feb 20, 1925

Phillip O Craver and Mrs Alma Robertson were married last Thursday night at the home of Rev D S Lunsford, pastor of the Baptist Church of  Harleton. She was Alma Shaffer.

Milton Molhusen, son of Mr & Mrs George Molhusen of Hallsville, was listed among the first ten in a class of 108 in the University of Texas law school, junior class.

Dr E T Rosborough has recovered from his recent illness and resumed practice.

J G Parker returned home Tuesday night from visiting relatives in Red River County.

Mrs Cora Hill, Mr Simmons, Mrs Rosson, Willie Harrell, all of Dallas, Mrs Cooper of Marshall and Mrs Press Burnett of Wills Point attended the funeral of Guy Bechtold Sunday.

Guy Bechtold was born Feb 11, 1901 at Hallsville and died Feb 14, 1925 at St Paul's Sanitarium, Dallas. He was married to Ruth Dale Hill of  Dallas on June 12, 1920. He is survived by his wife, one small daughter, Kathleen, his father, J H Bechtold; three sisters and one
brother. Mrs D J Lovelace of Hallsville; Mrs Frank Waldron of Duncan, OK; Mrs Chesley Bell of Hallsville and Robert D Bechtold of Tyler. Funeral services were conducted by Elder Reagan and the body was laid to rest in the Hallsville Cemetery beside that of his mother, who preceded him to the grave by only a few weeks.

Mrs Melba Pruitt of Longview is visiting her sister, Mrs Bill Quillin.

Jan 9 1925

Aaron Aycock aged 95 years, died Sunday at the home of his son, Boss Aycock, in the Gum Springs community. Mr Aycock was one of the oldest members of the Hallsville Baptist Church, a Confederate Veteran. Buried in the Hallsville Cemetery.

A Watch Party at the "Oaks"
Mr & Mrs Chester F Haywood entertained Wednesday evening, Dec 31, 1924, with a "Watch Party" honoring the homecoming of the college and university boys and girls for the holidays. Mrs Lena Brown and Charles Hall assisted the host and hostess in receiving the guests. Among the guests were Miss Mary Cullen, Melvin Brazzil, Mr Richard Hall, Jr.

Mr & Mrs W S Sypert entertained "Hallsville's social set of several years ago. Mrs Carr P Collins of Dallas, their sister, being the honored guest". Other guests were Mr & Mrs Bert Bivins of Longview, Mr & Mrs Tom H Etheridge of San Antonio, Dr & Mrs G C Lovelace of Troup, Mrs Leon Grimes of Shreveport, Miss Myrtle Jenson, Mrs W T Ware, Miss Alice Hope, and Mrs Sam B Hall of Marhsall, Mr & Mrs Raymond Cain, Mr & Mrs J H Parker, Messers Emory and Irvin Black, Walter Summers and roger Collins of Hallsville.

Mr & Mrs H L Foster entertained their family with a turkey dinner at the noon hour. Guests present were Mr & Mrs T P Black, Mr & Mrs R D Foster, Emory Black, Irvin Black, and Mr & Mrs Henry L Foster.

Dr G C Lovelace and family of Troup visited Hallsville relatives during the holidays.

Elmo Bass, Jr and family of Nacogdoches visited relatives here during the holidays.

Miss Grace McNeal of Woodlawn spent the holidays with Mr & Mrs Ira S Koon.

Miss Sadie Kte Bass from Longview spent the holidays with home folks.

Robert Bechtold and wife were here from Tyler during the holidays with his parents.

B B Olive and Aubrey Sloan were here from Smackover, AR oil fields,   spending Sunday with their families, returning Monday.

News comes from "out of the west" that Bill Reel, a Hallsville boy,  was married to Miss Claudie Rhodes at Winters, TX on the 22nd day of December, 1924.

The citizens' National Bank of Longview has gone out of business. The Commercial Guaranty State Bank took over it's deposits and business.


Jan 16, 1925

Mrs J H Bechtold died 8 Jan 1925. She was Anna Jane Hudspeth, age 57, having been born 12 Aug 1867 in Harrison Co., she married Joseph H  Bechtold in Hallsville on 10 Mar 1889. "The deceased was a woman pure and saintly, being a lifelong member of the Church of Christ..." Besides her husband she leaves to mourn five children...and many other relatives, and a large number of dear friends. The girls: Mrs D J Lovelace, Hallsville; Mrs Chesley Bell, Hallsville, Mrs Frank Waldron, Duncan, OK. The boys: Guy Bechtold, Dallas; Robert Bechtold, Tyler. The brother: Dave Hudspeth, Hallsville; Charley Hudspeth, Oakland, CA. The funeral was Thursday, service conducted by Elder Moser of Longview.

Tea towel shower given by Miss Eula Ponder and Miss Louise Manuel in honor of Miss Sallie Pate Hayes, "bride of the week". On arriving each guest was given a towel to embroider. Guests were Misses Vreda Ferges, Virginia Smith, Media Richardson, Hazel Thrasher, Eva Pearl Sypert,  Grace Nelson, Sallie Pate Hayes, Mrs Gilbert Bass and Mrs Douglas Milstead.

Born to Mr & Mrs Ellis Hickey, Wednesday Jan 14, a boy

Directors elected at Farmers State Bank were J B Cullen, Sr, in place of W P Lawrence, resigned; G F Mohusen, vice president; F M Armstrong and Joel B Cullen, Jr, cashier and assistant cashier, respectively.
