The Eighth Illinois Infantry in Marshall, Texas, 1865
Records of the Adjutant General's Office - Post Hospital

In June, 1865, Union Troops - mostly from the 8th Illinois Infantry - were sent to Marshall, Texas, as part of the "occupation", as most Southerners referred to the period following Lee's surrender at Appomatox, and Lincoln's assassination.  It is believed that troops were stationed near the Powder Mill, just northwest of town.  Marshall was one of two Texas towns - the other being Waxahatchie - with powder mills during the Civil War.  A hospital was set up to care for any sick or injured soldiers.  There were a variety of complaints - among them were dysentery, typhoid fever, syphillis, and burns.  (On August 28, 1865, there was an explosion at the powder mill, just west of Marshall.  Four soldiers were severely burned, and two of them died.)
The table below is a list of the 101 men who spent time in the Post Hospital.  In 1965, local historian V. H. Hackney, obtained this list from the National Archives, and made a copy for the files of the Harrison County Historical Museum.  Recently, Cathy Carter entered the list in an Access file, and made it available for use on this web site.  She copied exactly from Mr. Hackney's transcription, which is presumed to be an accurate copy from the original document.  Some of the diseases are fairly easy to guess, but we do not know what "Jules Fever" was - "chills and fever" maybe?
