Pension application of Civil War appr. 20 mar 1901 (#7809) states that he was a private in Co . 
A. (Capt.Alford) of Harrison's Battalion, and also served in Co. B of 28th Louisiana volunteers as 
attested by his Captain  J.W.Abney .Service was from 1862 for a few months then spring of 1863 
to end of war. At the close of the Battle of Vicksburg, the men of the 28th/29th Louisiana 
Volunteers did not want to surrender. They wanted to continue fighting instead. Their officers 
convinced them to accept the surrender. H.C.Cross is listed in his pension application as being 
69 yrs of age and indigent. He is stated to have moved to Fannin Co. Texas in 1872.

A story told to me by his grandson Earnest Cross, son of John Sidney Cross, was that when "Cape" 
moved his family to Texas they had camped one night. A stranger approached the camp and asked 
to stay with them for the night for mutual protection. The next morning both the stranger and the horses 
were gone. Cape left his family and started after the stranger. When he returned to the camp he had 
the horses, but did not tell them how he got them back.

Pictures that were in his wallet when he died are now in my posession, given to me by my late 
cousin, Emma Cross Traylor.

In the 1840 Lowndes Co. MS US Census Cape is with Father John Cross and family.  In 1850 Lowndes 
Co. MS US Census he is with brother in law Milton G. Bean & family.  In 1860 Bossier Parish , LA US 
Census he is head of household  with wife Minerva and three children, a cousin and a boarder.In 1880 
Fannin Co. TX US Census he is head of household with wife Minerva and 7 unmarried children. In 1900
 Fannin Co. TX US Census he is living with his son S.Q.(Stocks Quil ler) Cross and his wife & child.

Notes for MINERVA LUCINDA INABINET:
Minerva is listed in the 1850 Bossier Parrish Louisiana Census living with one of Henry Caper s Cross' 
1/2 brothers. Her marriage is recorded in the same parrish. Her tombstone is at Mount Hope Cemetary 
in Ivanhoe TX just a few miles north of Bonham.  A picture believed by most to be of her was in the wallet 
of her husband when he died. This picture strongly resembles that of Rebecca West, wife of James N. 
Platt, and a believed cousin to Minerva. James N. Platt is half-brother to Minerva's husband.

"Sid" as he was called became deaf in his later years. He is remembered as using an ear trumpet, and 
carrying a slate for people to write on. Only good things are spoken of this man who was loved by all his 
family and friends and neighbors. His life was one of hard work on a small farm raising three motherless 
daughters. His sons by his second marriage also lived with him in his small cabin and helped with the work.
 When my father came to him to ask if Josie could marry him, Grandpa Cross' main concern was that 
Daddy be good to her and care for her . Mother says that her dad would always try to keep his 
grandchildren from being spanked, and that they loved him dearly. He died one month before my birth 
and mother was unable to make the trip from Dallas for his funeral, a loss she still feels to this day.

Notes for MARGARET LEE "MAGGIE" RANEY:
Maggie was apparently married to a Martin before her marriage to J.N.Thompson.  No evidence of 
this marriage has been located, although her marriage record to Thompson lists her as Mrs M . L
Martin. It is believed that she had a daughter by that first marriage. When her husband Thompson 
died, she was left with a sawmill in Oklahoma, which she sold and brought her large family back to 
the New Boston area where she bought a farm across from Sid. Her mother and brothers were still 
in that area as well. The 1910 Bowie Co,. Texas Census shows her with her last husband, John Sidney 
"Sid" Cross. She states that she has had 14 children and that 10 are living. Maggie had 6 living 
children by her husband J.N.Thompson and 3 living children by Sid. Her daughter Josie  remembers 
a sister "Lizzie" from when she was small. This must be the daughter by Maggie's first husband who's 
surname was Martin.  Maggie's burial was in a small cemetery on a farm near her home. The cemetery
 was neglected for many years, and when I went there in 1980 it was overgrown with  "flags" The only 
stone she has bears just her initials . There are several other graves of family members and others. 
Tombstones had been broken an d toppled by cattle which at one time had been allowed to roam about. 
A fence has now been erected, and access is easier from the main road.

Josie's girlhood was spent without her mother who died when Josie was only 4 yrs. old. She 
still remembers her father as a warm loving man. When she married Otho at age 15, she had 
never been away from her family. She and Otho went to Vicksburg to begin their married life, 
and there she bore her first three children. The first time she was to see her father again was 
when she was expecting her first child, and he came to Vicksburg to visit her. She
remembers running down the steps to greet him, and him chastising her for taking such a 
chance. Josie & Otho moved several times, and in Dallas she bore her 4th child. When the fifth 
child, Edith, was imminent, Josie learned of the death of her father. She was unable to travel for 
his burial.  The marriage to Otho was rocky. Although he loved her very much, his addiction to 
alcohol became an impossible hurdle to overcome. After many separations and reconciliation, 
Josie knew she had to end the marriage.  Josie married three times after divorcing Otho in 1944. 
Her second marriage lasted only a fe w months, and was annulled. Next she married a bachelor,
"Bill" Pickle. That marriage laste d over twenty years, although they were separated the last few 
years before the divorce. Her last husband was Alton Megason, a romance that was rekindled from 
her girlhood days. Alton was in a nursing home in New Boston. When Josie retired from her job in 
Tulsa and returned to New Boston to live, she met him again. They were married at the nursing home, 
and Josie nursed Alton through his last years.  At age 88, Josie came to live with me, her dtr. Edith, 
and my family. She is an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys and attends as many games as possible 
with my oldest son Alan, who is happy to be able to go with her. Because of her age, mother's steps 
are not sure, so Alan gets a wheel chair and they sit in the special section for aged and handicapped 
fans.

Henry married Cara Cross, sister of Sid Cross. "Aunt Cara" had possession of
a set of silver spoons that had been in the Cross family for generations. They were mentioned in the 
will of her grandfather John Cross and in the inventory of property of her great-grandfather Samuel 
Cross. Cara gave a spoon to each of Maggie's daughters by Sid. Josie's spoo n was plain silver 
with the letter C in the handle. It was obviously very old. I haven't seen Susie's or Maudie's but I 
believe they are in possession of their daughters.

Aunt Maudie was crippled by Rheumatic Fever when she was only 18 months old.
One foot was severely crippled, causing her to need a crutch to walk. She
managed to raise a large family despite her handicap, and in later years kept
her own apartment until finally going into a nursing home in Texarkana where
she is at this writing. Aunt Maudie is a scrapper, and when I visited her
Sunday (Feb.5,1995) her eyes were bright and alert in her tiny body. She and
her husband and family lived on Grandpa Cross' farm until the children were
grown. Her son Lloyd bought the family place, and he lives there today.

Arkansas...then Bonham,TX -then Vernon, TX in 1939, moved from Vernon in 1941, then Eloy,
AZ where he died in 1956. That's really all dad knows, but he's trying to think of anything else he can 
re-call....Also my Dad has a memory of going with his Dad in TX to a relative's house that had her 
husband buried in her front yard and used to scare Dad half to death as a child to have to walk 
past by a grave on his way into the house."
