until after the 4-C plant at Ratcliff (Kennard) was already operating.

Capacity Comments: About 40,000 feet daily
Type of Mill: Pine lumber

known as Munzheimer) operated in Bowie County. American Lumberman
in 1899 reported that the new Red Water Lumber Company Filer &
Stowell band saw would begin cutting in the summer of 1899. The mill
pond could hold 1,000,000 feet. The mill was located only one-half
mile from the timber. In 1905, a credit-rating journal reported the
name as Redwater Lumber Company and again in 1907. Munz contracted
with other, smaller mills for their cuts. Munz had operated a logging
tram from Red Water before 1902 to Munz, about eighteen miles distant.
The community of Munz, in Cass County, was named after the owner of
the Red Water Lumber Company and functioned as a logging front for
Red Water Lumber. In 1902, the logging tram was chartered as a common
carrier. It continued to buy right-of-way in 1903 in Bowie County.
The Railroad Commission of Texas dropped its recognition in 1908.
Zlatkovich reports that the road had been abandoned in 1907. Cass
County deeds of trust records, beginning in 1905, indicate that the
Redwater Lumber Company began having financial problems. Some of the
equipment mortgaged included the sawmill, the planing mill, dry kilns,
buildings, trams, and sheds. As early as 1903, the Central Coal &
Coke Company received a civil judgment against Red Water Lumber. In
1909, Red Water Lumber Company was in receivership.

Capacity Comments: At least 85,000 feet of lumber daily by 1893
Type of Mill: Lumber
Power Source: 140-horsepower steam engine
Equipment: Two circulars and a gang in 1880
City/Town: Buchanan Station
Historical Development: William Buchanan, the future lumber magnate
from Texarkana, established a sawmill complex at Buchanan Station,
in Precinct 1 of Bowie County, sometime before 1880. E. P. Cowan joined
him shortly thereafter. During the reporting period of the Census
of 1880, the large sawmill operated for eight months . It was valued
at $30,000 and Buchanan paid from $1.50 to $3.25 per day to forty
employees. The work day was twelve hours. Buchanan did not do his
own logging. In December of 1883, Buchanan and Cowen sold out to Sulphur
Lumber Company, an operation of Herman Munzheimer, who also bought
the nearby Jones & Bemis sawmill plant at Sulphur Station at the
same time. Sulphur Lumber Company had two large mills, one at Buchanan
and the other at Sulphur Station, in the 1890s. According to the Galveston
newspaper report of 1893, one mill was cutting 85,000 feet daily and
the other 90,000 feet daily. American Lumberman reported in January
1899 that Gus Munzesheimer's sawmill at Sulphur Station burned with
an uninsured loss of $3,000. The sawmill was destroyed, only the planing
mill being saved. Munzesheimer was not going to rebuild at the Station
but intended erecting a new mill at Red Water of about 50,000-ft capacity
next to the tracks of the Cotton Belt. Munzheimer had probably closed
the Buchanan Station mill before 1899.
Corporate Name: Sulphur River Lumber Company
Owner/Company Affiliation: Sulphur River Lumber Company, Gus and Herman
Munzheimer. James Hervey Bemis and Erastus Jones.
Location: Sulphur Station, south of Texarkana
County: Bowie
Comment on Periods of Operation: 1879 to 1899
Capacity Comments: 90,000 feet of lumber daily in 1893
Type of Mill: Lumber
Power Source: Steam
Equipment: Sawmill and planing mill
City/Town: Sulphur Station
Historical Development: Erastus Jones of Massachusetts established
one of the largest sawmills of the time in Texas at Sulphur Station.
The location was at the Texas & Pacific crossing on the north
bank of the Sulphur River. The Census of 1880 reported that the mill
boilers could produce 235 horsepower; it operated full time the entire
year. The mill was valued at $100,000, and its owner(s) paid $20,000
in annual wages to sixty-five employees. The work day was eleven hours,
and daily wages ranged from $1.50 to $3.00. Because the company did
not do its own logging, it can be assumed the entire labor force was
needed to operate the mill. Bowie County records reveal that James
H. Bemis, of Marion County, soon became involved as a business associate
of Erastus Jones. The mill burned sometime during 1883, and after
some haggling, Bemis and Jones disposed of the mill site and their
thousands of acres of stumpage to the Sulphur River Lumber Company
about the same time the latter bought out the very large sawmill complex
two miles north that belonged to William Buchanan and E. P. Cowan.
These purchases made Sulphur River Lumber the largest producer of
lumber in the state. According to the Galveston newspaper report of
1893, one mill was cutting 85,000 feet daily and the other 90,000
feet daily. American Lumberman reported in January 1899 that Gus Munzesheimer's
sawmill at Sulphur Station burned with an uninsured loss of $3,000.
The sawmill was destroyed, only the planing mill being saved. Munzesheimer
was not going to rebuild at the Station but intended erecting a new
