OBITS
Rains County Leader
Oct 30, 1908
P.P. Rains Dead
Uncle Press Rains of Point, a life-long resident of Rains county, died at
a hospital in Dallas last Sunday morning from injuried received in falling
from a trestle Thursday before. He had been visiting the Fair for several
days and had been robbed of all the money he had just a day or two before
he was hurt. It is not known how the accident occurred, but we learn the police
are making an investigation. His remains were taken in charge by an undertaker
and shipped by Mineola to Point Tuesday morning and interred in the Coats'
graveyard near Center Point Tuesday evening, in the presence of a large crowd
of relatives and friends. He was a son of Emory Rains, an alcalde under the
Mexican rule, and father of the homestead law of Texas, and for whom Rains
county and the town of Emory were names. Uncle Press Rains was the first Sheriff
of Rains county by appointment when the county was organized, and was afterwards
elected to the office. He was an ex-Confederate soldier and in pioneer days
fought the Indians back from the borders of civilization. The deceased leaves
two sisters, Mrs. T.A. Williams and Mrs. Maraney Williams of Point, and one
son in Oklahoma and one in this county, besides a great number of other relatives
to mourn his loss. WIth him one of the oldest landmarks of the State has passed
away from our view.
