Grandpa Smith Grant Alexander, who has been sick about eighteen months, breathed his last about 4:30 o’clock last Saturday evening, and passed on to his reward beyond this vale of tears. He was possibly the oldest man in the county and was beloved by all who knew him.
He was born in Fleming county, Kentucky, May 13, 1822, and moved to Rusk county, Indiana, in 1831, where in 1840 he was married to Miss Maranda Cooper. Of that union nine children were born, three sons and six daughters. He came to Texas in 1859 with a little band of 35 in wagons, and was on the road 60 days, landing in Parker county, near Springtown. His wife died the 23rd day of December, just about thirty days after he came to Texas. He married again the 14th day of April, 1861, to Mrs. Louisa Carson. From this union one son and three daughters were born, one dying in infancy. Eleven children were raised to be grown.
Grandpa Alexander was the father of 13 children, grandfather of 65 children, great-grandfather of 67 children, and great-great-grandfather to the fifth generation.
Thus another life has been spent – another race has been run. Peace be unto his ashes and rest unto his immortal soul.
His remains were interred at the Elm graveyard Sunday evening in the presence of a large concourse of people.

Death Notice:  Mrs J G Williams departed this life Jan 23, 1913.  She was born Sept 28, 1848, married to G H Williams
Oct 10, 1865. She was the mother of eleven children.  She joined the M E Church at the age of 16 years and lived an
exemplary Christian life to the day of her death, a kind and affectionate wife and a true and loving mother.  She leaves
a heart-broken husband, 8 children and a host of friends to mourn their loss, but their loss is her eternal gain. Her remains
were lain to rest in the Elm church cemetery, the funeral services being conducted by Rev J W Gorman.

Mr. J.F. Wilson Dead

Mr. J.F. Wilson was born July 20th, 1870. He was reared on the farm and in early life he professed faith in Christ and united with the Presbyterian church and lived in that church for several years, the then joined the Missionary Baptist church at Elm about fifteen years ago. He was a perfect Christian gentleman. He lived the life every day. He was twice married. He first married Mrs. Beaugh. This was a happy union. Mrs. Wilson died December 1915, leaving him alone, this union never having any children, but he reared
four orphan children. He was down in bed for seven weeks and though all was done by loved ones and friends that was possible to do to restore health, but all in vain. He departed this life July 10th A.D. 1920 and was laid to rest in the Elm cemetery the following day after the funeral services by the writer, surrounded by a host of friends and acquaintances, some of them coming some distance to be present at this good mans burial for he numbered his friends by his acquaintances.

Mrs. Nealie Penneybaker Dead

On August 3rd a gloom of sadness was cast over our community when the death angel visited the home of W.J. Pennebaker and claimed for its victim the wife and mother, Nealie Pearl (Fitzgerald) Pennebaker. Nealie was sick nine days and her sufferings were many, but she bore them with patience. She believed from the start that Jesus was coming after he and she was ready to meet the Lord and be free from this world of troubles. She leaves a husband, three children, five brothers, four sisters, five half-brothers, two half-sisters, a step-mother and a number of other relatives and friends to mourn her death. It was sad to give her up but our loss is her gain. Oh, weep not for Nealie, for she has gone to live with Jesus and her loved ones gone on before. Her remains were buried in Elm cemetery, the Rev. In Memory of Marvin Pennebaker
Marvin Wendell Pennebaker was born near Grand Saline, Van Zandt County, Texas. He died at his home near Bonanza at 12:20 Friday afternoon. Jan. 26,1934, being 28 years, 5 months, and 26 days old.
He came to Rains County with his parents in January 1914. He has lived in the Elm Community since that time. He was married to Miss Nannie Potts Nov.4, 1925, and to this union one child was born. He professed faith in Christ at the age of 17 and lived a devoted Christian life. Marvin numbered his friends by his asquaintances. He was respected by all who knew him. He will be greatly missed by his many friends. weep not,. loved ones, Marvin can not come back, but we can go to him. Our loss is Heaven's gain. God loved hoved him more than we; he called him to be with Jesus where no sorrow ever comes.
He leaves behind a wife and son, a mother, one sister, two brothers and a host of other relatives and friends who mourn his death. His father passedaway last April.
Funeral services were conducted at the Elm Baptist Church by Rev. C.M. Martin and Rev. W. Kerens both of Emory. His remains were laid to rest in the Elm Cemetery on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 27.

Double Funeral for Nannie & Jim Dougherty

Nannie (Potts Pennebaker) Dougherty passed way Aug. 25 in a Greenville hospital, eight hours after her husband Jim Dougherty passed away that morning.
Nannie was born Nov. 16,1903, the daughter of Susie Huff and Erving Potts,. She was married to Marvin Pennebaker on Nov. 4,1924, who preceded her in death. To this union was born two children Charlie Wayne Pennebaker of Emory and Billie Marvin who died as a infant.
In 1941 she was married to Jim Dougherty. She left one son, Chatley Wayne, and three stepsons, Aubrey of California, Rayburn of Houston and Leo of san Antonio; one strpdaughter, Mrs. Junell Blanton of Bonanza; three grandchildren; seven brothers, Nealon, Irving, Perk, and Walter of Emory, Lloyd of Houston, O'Neal of Point, Buddie of Garland; six sisters, Vila of Farmersville. Exa Adams of Emory, Ollie May of Emory, Grace Slater of Wyoming, Bobbie Sloan of California, and Joyce Blanton of Emory; and mother, Mrs. Nettie Potts of Emory.
Nannie and Jim had a double funeral at Dougherty Church. Bro. Dimsdale and Bro. Clyde Passions conducted the services. Jim was carried to Dougherty Cemetery and Nannie to Elm Cemetery. Each was interred beside their former companions.

Funeral services for Elizabeth Gay Bullard Bryant, 48, of Emory were held at Elm Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 15. Burial followed in Elm Cemetery under the direction of Wilson-Orwosky Funeral Home. Mrs. Bryant died Saturday, March 13, at her residence. She was born January 25, 1956, to Odell and Annie Rae Beshea Bullard. She married Kenneth Dale Bryant in Rains County in July of 1992. She was a homemaker and a Baptist. Survivors include her husband, K.D. Bryant; sons, Joe Johnston Jr. and Joshua Johnston, both of Clay, La.; daughters, Tonya Ferrall of Jefferson City, Tenn. and Jessica Johnston of Bulls Gap, Tenn.; brothers, Mac Bullard of Sarepta, La., Joe David Bullard of Nacogdoches, Ray Bullard of Nacogdoches, and Maston Bullard of Blanchard, La.; sisters, Elaine McDaniel of Denim Springs, La., Pattie Holdiness of Mangum, La., Katie Lanclos of Clinton, La., and Tammie Adams of Keithville, La.; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter, Stephanie Johnston.

A private graveside service for Neva Watson, 76, of Emory was held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 5, at Elm Cemetery under the direction of Wilson-Orwosky Funeral Home with Minister Roger Hart officiating. Mrs. Watson passed away May 4 at her home in Emory after a brief illness. She was born Nov. 3, 1928, in Rains County to Robert L. and Ammie Hunter. She was a member of the church of Christ. She was a seamstress for 13 years and then a homemaker. She is survived by four children, seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was loved and will be greatly missed by all. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy M. Watson; her parents; and a sister, Vera Lee Rylant. Pallbearers were Ricky, Clint, Richie and Kevin Rylant, Ronnie McEnturff and Alan Pounds.

Charles Edwin Morgan
Graveside services for Charles Edwin Morgan of Emory will be held at the Elm Cemetery on Thursday, Oct. 21, at 2:00 p.m. Services are entrusted to Oak Hills Mortuary, 8332 Fredericksburg Rd., San Antonio. Mr. Morgan died Monday, Oct. 18, at the age of 75. He was a veteran of the Korean War. He enjoyed flying with his crew from Kelly A.F.B. in San Antonio. In 1966, Charles was named the Outstanding Crewman of the year at Kelly. Charles is survived by his wife of 50 years, Opal Terry Morgan; children, Terry Morgan and wife Susan, Judy Riebe and husband Norman, David Morgan and wife Vickie, and Debra Martinez and husband Michael; stepdaughter, Peggy Smith and husband Richard; sisters, Juanita, Glenda and Christine; grandchildren, Michelle and Jeremy Morgan, Brandon Fine, Jennifer Morgan, Kathleen Martinez, Coty, Shannon and Jackie Wells, Craig Long and Paula Orr; and two great-grandchildren, Sean Orr and Heather Long.

Funeral services for William F. “Bubba” Young, age 57, of Emory will be held at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home Chapel at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 13, 2005, with Rev. Billy Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Elm Cemetery with Jay Jenkins, J. C. Etheridge, L. J. Sells, Harold Haynesworth, Jimmy Jenkins and Larry Jenkins serving as pallbearers. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home. William F. “Bubba” Young passed away at 11:45 a.m. Sunday, July 10, at his residence. He was born in Sulphur Springs on February 20, 1948, the son of J. W. and Bertie Marie Freiberger Young. He married Phyllis A. Turner in Sulphur Springs on July 29, 1993; she survives. Mr. Young was an independent cattle buyer. He was a devout Christian. Other survivors include: one son, Deuce Young and wife Angela of Sulphur Springs; daughter, Audra Smith and husband Thomas of Lindale; two stepdaughters, Dachiel Turner and husband Todd of Mineola; Donna Williams and husband Michael of Como; mother, Bertie Young of Sulphur Springs; two sisters, Kay Fowler and husband David of Sulphur Springs; Sandra Irvin and husband Ronnie of Como; grandchildren, Blaine Smith, Bryce Smith, Fletcher Young, and Sophie Jane Young; step-grandchildren, Michael Turner, Bennett Turner, Rebecca Turner, Michaela Williams, Elijah Williams, Ashten Williams and numerous other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his father in 1994.
