Rains County Leader
established 1887
The Argus, ed. H.W. Martin, was the first Rains County newspaper of which there is an official record (vol. 1, Commissioners' Court minutes, 1882); it is possible from evidence of records that this paper was being published as much as 6 years prior to 1887. The county newspaper changed hands after 1887 and was called The Record; the publisher isn't known but Sam Fitzgerald and W.O. Hebisen worked on the paper. Before 1900 The Record was sold to A.S. Hornbeck and renamed The Rains County Leader, which masthead it carries today. In 1901 A.S. Hornbeck sold the paper to J.H. Bradford, who was a school teacher; in 1904 J.H. Bradford sold the paper to Tom W. Hill, Sr. who had gone to work as a "printer's devil" in 1898. In 1937 Tom W. Hill, Sr. died; his son Earl Clyde Hill, Sr. assumed the editorship of the paper until 1960. At that time his son, Earl Clyde Hill, Jr. became editory and remained until 1962. In 1962 Kathleen Hill Becknell, daughter of Tom W. Hill, Sr., became editor/publisher and continued as such until her death in 1995. Earl Clyde Hill, Jr. once again assumed the position of editor/publisher upon his aunt's death.
The newspaper is published weekly. The back page of each paper is dedicated to the preservation of Rains County history. The page is titled "Looking Back...."; it includes photos that are 50 years old or older, interviews, excerpts from early issues of The Rains County LEADER, or other interesting information about the county and its inhabitants. Photos and articles may be submitted for publication on the "Looking Back..." page by mailing them to the Rains County Leader
