COLONY SCHOOL
From intersection of Hwy. 69 and 19, travel Hwy 69S for 2.5 miles to FM 779. Turn right on 779, the school was 7.5 miles on the right. The existing church building that stands today was originally built as the school.
HISTORY
R.N. REED gave the land for the first school in 1887. This school was a log building located southwest of the Colony Cemetery near Big Creek. later, another school, made of slab lumber, was constructed across from the current Colony Church of Christ. Colony was first known as New Hope and the name was changed to Colony in 1885. R.N. Reed gave the land for the first school in 1887. In 1912, the school was moved across the road to where the Church of Christ is now. The building that exists on the site today functioned as the school and later the church.
Ordered by the court that voting district precinct No. 2 be divided
with two school districts as prayed for by petitioners. Vincent and W.
Garrett voted nay.
Ordered by the court that the following described territory be known
and the same as established and declared a county school district of Rains
County, Texas, under an act of the 26th Legislature requiring that several
counties in this state be divided into school districts. Said district
to be known as Colony School District No. 13 meted and bounded as follows...
Beginning at the northwest corner of the Alba District; thence S with
the said District line to the SW corner; thence E with the S line of said
District to the county line; thence S with said county line to the Sabine
River; thence W with the river to the mouth of Frank's Creek; then N with
said creek to fork thence W with the west prong of said creek to where
the old Willow Springs road crosses it to the south line of the Center
Grove District line to the place of beginning. Dated May 1899 (Rains

Prof. Whitworth…closed out his school at the Colony, Friday, for the
present term
Colony school closed in 1926 and the students were sent to Bellview.
