Dunbar Dots
We got our dates wrong last week about the school closing, which we regret,
but it closed last Friday with a good crowd out and a nice program. Thie
work of our teachers, Misses Ophelia and Myrtle Myers, has been very satisfactory
and the patrons are complimenting them on the good work.

The Dunbar school is progressing nicely under the management of Mrs. BELL and
Mrs. ALLEN. They have organized a literary two weeks on Friday night.
It will meet tonight (Friday). Everybody is invited to come.

SCHOOL HISTORY
The Dunbar school was located in the southern part of Rains County. Take Highway
19 south from the Hwy 69 & 19 intersection in Emory. Go five miles to County
Road 1301. Take a left on County Road 1301and travel approximately ½
mile. The first church and school building to be built were located just east
of the northeast corner of the cemetery.

In the 1890's Sabine Pass was established by tie-makers. The first postmaster was Sam Aaron from Dunbar, Tenn. When the postal authority requested a name change for the community due to having another "Sabine Pass" somewhere in Texas, Sam chose the name "Dunbar".
Ordered by the court that the following described territory be established and declared a school district of Rains County, Texas, under the virtue of an act of the 26th Legislature requiring that several counties of this state to be divided into independent school districts. Said district to be known as Sabine Pass School District No. 10 meted and bounded as follows… Beginning at the northwest corner of the H.A. Latham survey; thence south with east line of the Smyrna School District #9 to the channel of Sabine River; thence east with the channel of Sabine River to the mouth of the Sandy Creek; thence north with channel of Sandy Creek to mouth of Denson Branch; thence north with said John Belcher Survey; thence east with said Belcher's north line to Mrs. A. Clark's NW corner; thence E with Mrs. Clark's north line to Sandy Creek to Emory School District line; thence west with Emory School District line to the place of beginning. Ordered established May 1899 (Rains County Commissioners Court Minutes, vol. 3, page 195)
On this day comes to be heard the appreciation of 22 free holders residing
in Sabine School District #10, asking this Court to grant them election
to determine whether or not there should be a tax of 20c on each $100 valuation
of property in said school district for the purpose of supplementing the
general school fund and for the erection of a school building in said Sabine
school district #10. It is therefore ordered that said petition be and
the same is hereby granted that an election be ordered to be held on the
23rd day of December AD1899 to be held at Sabine schoolhouse in said district
and that L.W. Chapman, H.N. Wade & H.S. Myers be and they are hereby
appointed to hold.said election. Approved November 14, 1899 (Rains County

Be it resolved by the County Board of School Trustees, of Rains County,
Texas, assembled in regular session at their usual meeting place in the
city of Emory, a quorum of said Board being present and participating that:
Whereas, Dunbar Common School District of Rains County, has been by this
Board abolished and the school therein discontinued; and Whereas the buildings
now standing on the land herein described were erected by said School District
and a lot was purchased from Jim Pound for school purposes; Whereas, said
buildings are needed by said Dunbar Community for religious and community
purposes; Now, Therefore, we, the County Board of School Trustees of Rains
County, Texas, do hereby authorize the sale of said lot, together with
the buildings thereon to the said the Dunbar community for and in consideration
of the sum of $1 cash; and Whereas said Community has designated J.P. Porter,
Leland Fleming and W.A. Arnold as Trustees to take title of said property
in trust for said Dunbar Community, it is ordered that deed of conveyance
of said property be executed to said trustees, in trust for said Community.
Be it further resolved that Jim McBride, President of the County Board
of School Trustees, and Arthur Jones, Secretary to said Board, be, and
they are hereby authorized and directed to execute a deed of conveyance,
conveying the property to said trustees above named. Above resolution passed
16 November 1950 Arthur Jones, County Judge witnessed 16 November 1950
Being a part of the B. de O'Sinea Survey : Beginning at the NE corner of
a tract of land in the B. de O'Sinea Survey conveyed to J.J. Pound by a
deed recorded in volume 28, page 321 of the Deed Records, Rains County,
Texas; Thence west 336 feet; Thence south with a well established fence
line 378 feet; Thence east with a well established fence line 341 feet
to the WB line of the W.M. McClenden tract of land; Thence north 374 feet
to the place of beginning, containing 2 acres of land, including a part
of the public road on the north and east sides of this tract of land, and
being the lot of land on which the Dunbar School house now stands and being
School District No. 10. Dated 24 January 1951 The second building used
as a school and church was built about 1904 or 1905.
