HOPEWELL CEMETERY

Our thanks go to the Upshur County Historical Commission for allowing us to use their reading of Hopewell Cemetery.  The reading was done by: Thurman Hearn, Thurman Cagle, Durward Amos, Finley Tucker, Garland Bullock, and Curtis Hart. It was completed June 1, 2000. Thanks also go to Lea Ann Tedford  for the use of her partial reading. We have merged the two to help insure no one was missed. There are many unmarked graves, and graves marked only with native rocks.

Update: Thanks to Billy L Thompson, Sue Kennington, and Fendley Tucker, Secretary/Treasurer of the Hopewell Cemetery, for the recent update.  This should make the listing current through May 24, 2009.

Mathis (1808-1867) and Martha Ann Fowler (1819-1847). He moved to Texas with his father in November, 1850. During the Civil War he was a Private in Company D, 10th Texas Confederate Cavalry serving with father William B. Mathis as Sgt. & brothers William Nicholas Mathis & Jacob Lewis Mathis all in the same company. He married 30 Mar 1865 in Upshur County to wife #1 Martha Jane Gaston (1846-1899).  (wife #3 M E Lizzie Steelman Mathis Smith )
