MORGAN  CEMETERY

UPDATED:  Apr 2009 - Completely photographed & transcribed by Geraldine Little Braswell & Sandy Spann.
Read by Ruby Shamburger in June, 1998 and submitted by the Upshur County Historical Commission.

2005 - Thanks to Jane Eubanks for the great pictures! She tells us:  This cemetery is in very bad shape. It is so overgrown, it's hard to walk around in. The boy scouts came out a few years ago and cleaned it up but it has not been maintained and is in bad shape again. The man who lives next to it enjoys having visitors come by. There are several small stones lying around that he says were graves of Indian Chiefs.

Going north from Gladewater on Hwy 271, go 5 miles from the Upshur Co line and turn left on the county road next to the West Mountain Volunteer Fire Dept. Go .5 mile and take the second road on the left beside a big blue water tank.  Go .2 mile and the cemetery is on the left up on a hill by a mobile home. This cemetery is fenced and is in an over grown condition. The Boy Scouts from Gilmer are to clean it up soon.

As hard as we all try, we are human and sometimes when reading a cemetery we miss a grave covered with leaves, fireants, or bushes. Sometimes the headstone has sunk and is mostly underground. Our area also has many graves only marked with iron ore rocks and even many unmarked graves. There are headstones that have long ago been destroyed by the elements or even vandalizm, and are hard to impossible to read the details. We would appreciate it if you would let us know if you did not find your relative which was buried here, and would appreciate your letting us use the information you know about them. With the combined efforts of us all, we can make the Upshur County website bigger and better.
