Saddam Hussien controled Iraq; in 1990 he invaded Kuwait and thus controlled one-fourth of the world's oil supplies.  His next target was Saudi Arabia.  The U.S. entered the conflict on January 17, 1991 after being called upon by Saudi Arabia for protection.
